Aaron Boupendza, the celebrated Gabonese international, has died at the age of 28 in a tragic incident that occurred in Zhejiang, China, where he was playing for Zhejiang Professional FC.

Local reports, echoed by Romanian and African media, confirm that Boupendza fell from the 11th floor of his residence. Although the specifics of the incident are still being investigated, the Gabonese Football Federation has formally verified his death.

Suicide, Accident, or Foul Play?

Authorities in China are investigating all possible scenarios, including suicide, accidental fall, or potential criminal involvement.

  • No eyewitnesses have emerged so far.
  • Surveillance footage and toxicology reports are currently being examined.
  • The autopsy will be key in revealing more details.

Boupendza was reportedly absent from the club’s last training session, and his situation only became clear after a friend alerted Zhejiang officials of the incident.

From Hatayspor Hero to Global Journeyman

Boupendza’s talent was first spotted at CF Mounana in Gabon before rising to fame in Turkey with Hatayspor, where he scored 22 goals in the 2020–21 Süper Lig season, winning the Golden Boot.

His career later took him to:

  • France (Bordeaux)
  • Qatar (Al Arabi)
  • Saudi Arabia (Al Shabab)
  • USA (MLS)
  • Romania (Rapid București)
  • China (Zhejiang FC)

Though recently sidelined from the Gabon national team, Boupendza was reportedly aiming to revive his career with a fresh chapter in China.

Zamalek Await FIFA Decision Despite Tragedy

In a separate matter, Egyptian club Zamalek confirmed they are still awaiting a decision from FIFA regarding a legal dispute with Boupendza.

The club had accused him of contract breach after backing out of an agreed move last summer to join Rapid București instead. Despite his passing, Zamalek’s legal team is consulting FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber for guidance.
