From Al Ahly to Adversity: Mohamed Abdelmonem’s Tough Start at Nice

Since moving from Al Ahly to Nice in the summer for €5 million, Mohamed Abdelmonem's journey has not been easy. The Egyptian international, who was formerly regarded as one of Africa's best defenders, has suffered a number of failures in France.

Abdelmonem was impressive in his early days with Nice, but soon found himself on the sidelines. But an opportunity came when veteran defender Dante suffered an injury, allowing Abdelmonem to shine. He put in a fine performance before fate struck again – a pre-match injury ruled him out of Europa League and Ligue 1 matches, as well as Egypt’s recent AFCON qualifiers.

The player returned to the field in a Europa League game against Rangers, but his confidence took another hit when a big error led to Nice's 4-2 defeat.

Making things worse, Abdelmonem has trouble communicating because he doesn't speak French or English very well. His language tutor’s unexpected illness has delayed his progress, leaving him with only basic phrases—a hurdle that impacts his performance on the pitch and in training sessions.

Abdelmonem remains committed to adapting, but his challenges highlight the difficulties players face when transitioning to foreign leagues.
