Former world No. 1 and Grand Slam champion Simona Halep announces retirement
During the tennis tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Simona Halep faced Lucia Bronzetti. Following her defeat, the Romanian star made a major announcement regarding her future in the sport.
Details: Halep suffered a straight-sets loss (0-2), winning just two games in the match. After the defeat, the 33-year-old officially declared her retirement from professional tennis.
Quote: "I don’t want this decision to seem too easy. There are many emotions inside me. I am a very realistic person because I know the kind of work that needs to be done. My mind and body can no longer keep up.
I feel professionally fulfilled, which made the decision easier. I realized how tough the last 15 years have been, and maybe there are other aspects of life to explore. I want to enjoy what I feel now, and I think it’s time to look at something new," Halep stated.
Halep played 821 singles matches in her career, winning 580 of them. She claimed 24 WTA titles, including Roland Garros (2018) and Wimbledon (2019). She was also a finalist at the 2018 Australian Open and a semifinalist at the 2015 US Open.
She reached the final of the WTA Finals in 2014, where she lost to Serena Williams. Halep held the world No. 1 ranking from October 2017 to January 2018.
