Guido Burgstaller, former Schalke footballer currently playing for Rapid Vienna, was the victim of a violent assault in the center of Vienna, reports Bild. An unidentified man attacked him, causing severe head injuries. After a heavy blow, Burgstaller fell, resulting in a skull fracture, all witnessed by bystanders.
"Guido was immediately examined and is now undergoing treatment at a Vienna hospital. Unfortunately, he will have to stay there for the next few days, and his recovery is expected to take several months," read a statement from Rapid Vienna.
This incident might mark the premature end of the 35-year-old’s career. Burgstaller had planned to retire in the summer of 2025 when his contract with Rapid was set to expire.
The Austrian forward spent four years at Schalke, playing 95 matches and scoring 32 goals. He also played for Nürnberg and St. Pauli during his time in Germany. On the international stage, Burgstaller made 26 appearances for the Austrian national team, scoring two goals.
