Forget ordinary football stadiums! In Bolivia, one club welcomes opponents to a ground located more than four kilometres above sea level. The incredible altitude makes every match a serious physical challenge.

Details: Bolivian club Always Ready play their home matches at Estadio Municipal de El Alto, also known as Villa Ingenio, in the city of El Alto. The stadium's altitude is widely reported as approximately 4,150 metres, nearly half the height of Mount Everest, which stands at 8,849 metres. However, the local municipality has also cited a figure of 4,090 metres. Regardless of the precise measurement, the venue ranks among the highest professional football stadiums in the world.

Playing at such an altitude is far from easy. The lower oxygen pressure can make physical exertion particularly demanding for visiting teams unfamiliar with the conditions. Players may experience faster fatigue, breathlessness and reduced endurance, turning an ordinary ninety minute match into a remarkable test.

Always Ready have made the location part of their identity. In February 2024, CONMEBOL approved the stadium for Copa Libertadores matches after infrastructure improvements. That decision allowed the Bolivian club to host continental opponents in one of South America's most unusual football environments.

The extreme altitude has influenced international football as well. Brazil suffered a 1:0 defeat against Bolivia in El Alto during the 2025 World Cup qualifiers. Carlo Ancelotti subsequently acknowledged how difficult the conditions had been for his players. For visiting teams, adapting to the thin mountain air can be as important as preparing their tactics.

It's worth noting that El Alto is situated above neighbouring La Paz in the Bolivian Andes. The stadium's altitude is frequently rounded to 4,150 metres, although official local figures vary. Either way, Always Ready can boast one of the most extraordinary home grounds in world football.

Reminder: Ancelotti admits Brazil struggled in defeat at high altitude in El Alto.
