The transfer of Real Betis central midfielder Guido Rodríguez to Barcelona this summer is on the brink of collapse.

According to Diario Sport, Barcelona had agreed on the transfer of the Argentine midfielder when Xavi was still the head coach, and the club had no plans to dismiss him.

However, with the appointment of Hansi Flick, the necessity for such a transfer has diminished. The German coach prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation and does not require a defensive midfielder of Rodríguez's profile.

It is reported that Barcelona has currently put negotiations with the 30-year-old on hold. The final decision will be made by the new head coach.

Guido Rodríguez's contract with Betis expires next month, making him a free agent.

Rodríguez has been with Betis since January 2020, after transferring from Mexican club América. The 30-year-old midfielder has made 171 appearances for Betis, scoring 9 goals and providing 4 assists.

With the Argentine national team, Guido Rodríguez won the 2022 World Cup, though he played in only one match during the tournament, in the group stage against Mexico.
