The final of the Ice Hockey World Championship took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 25. Competing for the ultimate hockey glory were the national teams of Switzerland and the USA.

Throughout the game, the Americans held the upper hand, entering the match as slight favorites. Early in the second period, Vancouver forward Conor Garland missed a penalty shot, and the fans had to wait in vain for any goals during regulation time.

In overtime, it took Team USA just a few minutes to clinch their first World Championship victory since 1933. The decisive goal was scored by Tage Thompson.

Remarkably, the Americans had waited 65 years for a win on the world stage. In 1960, the USA captured Olympic gold, which at the time also counted as the World Championship. As for the standalone World Championships, the previous American triumph dated all the way back to 1933.

Earlier, the tournament hosts, Team Sweden, secured third place by defeating Denmark 6-2.
