London’s Chelsea has confirmed that last season was the most unprofitable in the history of English football.
Details: According to the financial report from Chelsea FC Holdings Limited, the club's pre-tax deficit reached an astronomical £262.4 million ($349 million). These figures officially cement the “Blues” as the club with the largest annual loss ever recorded in the Premier League.
Interestingly, the club’s figures differ from UEFA’s February report, which estimated the losses at £342 million. As The Athletic explains, this discrepancy is the result of the strict regulations imposed by the European football governing body, which excludes non-relevant income and aims to reflect the true operating cost of running a club.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s internal reports are based on general accounting standards not specific to football, which allowed the final figure to be softened on paper.
Reminder: Barcelona are ready to sell their star to Chelsea.
