Former world number seven and Australian Open 2022 finalist Danielle Collins (USA, WTA 48) failed to continue her match in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 hardcourt tournament in Austin, Texas, against Wang Xiyu (China, WTA 64).

The American lost the first set (2:6) and then retired from the match. The official reason for this decision is unknown, but it is presumed that Collins may have a back injury.

On February 29, after defeating Katie Volynets in the round of 16 of the tournament, Danielle made the following statement at a press conference:

"By the end of this [tournament], maybe I'll be picked up by a pharmaceutical company... Rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, chronic pain, overuse injuries... I mean, I'm every pharmacist's dream," said Collins.

Wang Xiyu advanced to the semifinals of the 250-level event in Texas, where she will face Angelina Kalinina.

It is worth noting that Collins had previously stated at the Australian Open that she would likely retire after the current season.
