Negotiations over a contract extension between Flamengo and head coach Filipe Luís have hit a deadlock.
Details: According to Brazilian journalist Venê Casagrande, the main stumbling block in the talks is the coach’s agent demanding a salary that the club considers too high. Flamengo has given Filipe Luís’s agent, Jorge Mendes, until the end of today to agree to lower the wage demands.
The Flamengo board was willing to make concessions, but the two sides have yet to reach a compromise, and, at this stage, a contract extension seems unlikely.
Flamengo would like to keep Luís, but under the current circumstances, the club will be forced to look for a new head coach if the salary issue is not resolved. The board is confident they have done everything possible to retain the coach.
It’s worth noting that under Filipe Luís, Flamengo had a sensational season, clinching the Brazilian Série A title, winning the Copa Libertadores, and reaching the Intercontinental Cup final, where they narrowly lost to PSG on penalties.
Reminder: Flamengo have shown interest in signing legendary Brazilian footballer Neymar.
