After serving a suspension that initially disqualified him from playing for the national team, Emilio Nsue, the captain of Equatorial Guinea, has been reinstated by FIFA.
Reversal of FIFA’s Ban
In May 2024, FIFA ruled that Nsue, who was born in Spain and played for its youth teams, was never eligible to represent Equatorial Guinea. Despite this, he had continued playing for the National Thunder, leading to a six-month international ban.
However, Equatorial Guinean Football Federation President Venancio Tomás Ndong Michá confirmed the positive news:
“We are very happy to confirm that FIFA has approved Emilio Nsue’s eligibility. This is one of the greatest achievements of this Executive Board and a great joy for the people of Equatorial Guinea.”
Key Return Ahead of Crucial Matches
Nsue, the nation’s all-time leading scorer with 23 goals in 42 appearances, is now eligible to rejoin the squad for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against São Tomé and Príncipe and Namibia later this month.
