This week will see the conclusion of the FedEx Cup playoffs with the final event, the Tour Championship, beginning on Thursday, August 29, to determine the overall winner.
The FedEx Cup, introduced by the PGA Tour in 2007, is a season-long championship trophy. Points are awarded based on finishing positions in all PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments throughout the season. The players with the highest points after the regular season qualify for the playoffs.
During the regular season, golfers earn points in each event. The winner of a PGA Tour event receives between 300 and 600 FedEx Cup points, depending on the tournament's status. The top players advance to the playoffs.
The playoffs consist of three tournaments: the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship. The first event features 70 golfers, the second 50, and the final event, the Tour Championship, includes 30 players from which the FedEx Cup champion is determined.
Winning the Tour Championship is an official victory, and the FedEx Cup champion receives an $18 million bonus and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
At the end of last week, the name of the winner of the BMW Championship golf tournament was announced.
