F1 Driver Sergio Perez Criticizes His Father for Homophobic Remarks
Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has publicly criticized his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, for making homophobic comments directed at Ralf Schumacher, Bild reports.
Antonio Perez, attempting to defend his son against what he perceived as unfair criticism from Schumacher, made controversial remarks during an ESPN podcast.
"I don't know if he was in love with Checo. Do you understand it? There are many strange things. You no longer know if he is a journalist, a woman, a gentleman. But his opinion does not matter, not because of Checo Perez, but because of what his [ex-]wife said about him," Antonio stated.
The comments sparked widespread backlash. Sergio Perez condemned his father’s statements, saying he completely disagrees with them. However, he emphasized that he cannot be held responsible for his father’s words or actions.
Ralf Schumacher also responded, writing on Instagram that he isn’t angry at Antonio Perez, understanding his emotions as a father wanting to protect his son. Schumacher added, however, that the best response to his critique would be Sergio Perez’s performance on the track.
