UEFA has officially confirmed that it has received a substantial dossier of documents from Real Madrid relating to the Negreira case, and its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors will assess the materials as part of the ongoing investigation into Barcelona.

Details: According to AS, the Madrid club sent UEFA around 50,000 pages of documents, evidence and statements with the aim of reactivating the case against their eternal rivals.

The so-called Negreira case revolves around payments of around €7.7 million made by Barcelona to companies linked to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, over a period of many years. Real Madrid formally entered the process back in June, submitting a written statement to UEFA's disciplinary bodies and demanding firm action, and have now followed up with a mountain of documentary evidence. The war between the two giants has long since spilled beyond the pitch: Barcelona have responded with legal action of their own, issuing an ultimatum to Florentino Perez over his explosive public allegations. UEFA's confirmation that its inspectors are actively reviewing the fresh materials suggests the case is very much alive at the European level.

It's worth noting that the stakes for Barcelona could hardly be higher. If UEFA's disciplinary inspectors conclude that the payments compromised the integrity of competition, the Catalan club could face severe sanctions, with Madrid reportedly pushing for the harshest possible measures, including exclusion from European competition. Barcelona have consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting the payments were for legitimate refereeing consultancy reports, and president Joan Laporta has already testified in the parallel Spanish court proceedings, claiming he did not even know Negreira. The coming months could define the future of one of football's greatest institutions.
