Estudiantes challenge Peñarol for Muslera as transfer decision looms

Peñarol is still waiting on Fernando Muslera’s decision about his future, but a strong contender has entered the race: Estudiantes de La Plata. The Argentine club has submitted a contract offer to the veteran goalkeeper that runs through December 2026, according to local reports.
Muslera, 38, recently ended a legendary run with Galatasaray, where he won 19 titles over 14 seasons and became a club icon. He plans to return to Uruguay next week, hoping to stay close to his family and support Sportivo Bella Italia — a club where he holds shares as part of its sports corporation.
Peñarol remains hopeful of landing Muslera, with emotional ties and a clear sporting project on the table. However, financial negotiations are still ongoing. Club president Ignacio Ruglio confirmed that “two directors are handling” the matter and expressed confidence in a positive outcome.
Estudiantes’ late but serious offer adds pressure to the talks. The Argentine side is looking to bolster its squad with top-level experience, and Muslera fits the profile perfectly. For now, the ball is in the goalkeeper’s court.
