Eric Sékou Chelle Faces Pressure as New Coach of Super Eagles
Eric Sékou Chelle, who was recently named the new coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has promised to build a strong, attacking team that will aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During his introduction, Chelle shared his plan for success, saying, “We need to set clear rules for the team and treat the players like family to keep them motivated.” Our goal is to impose our style of play everywhere."
The Super Eagles are just three points from three draws and a loss after four games, putting them in fifth position in Group C and jeopardizing their chances of qualifying for the World Cup. Chelle, who guided Mali to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals while serving as their coach, is under a lot of pressure as Nigeria looks to finish their last six games with a perfect record in order to qualify.
Even though fans and former players, like two-time African Player of the Year Nwankwo Kanu, have criticized him, Chelle remains confident in his plan. His approach focuses on playing with high energy and an attacking style. “I believe Nigeria can make it to the World Cup,” Chelle said, showing his determination to lead one of Africa’s most famous teams.
Chelle has a two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, which might be extended if he aids in the team's World Cup qualifying. His employment has, however, sparked questions since some are not convinced if he can manage the high demands and pressures of coaching Nigeria. Nigerian football supporters will be watching Chelle closely as he begins his new position, hoping he can meet their lofty expectations.
