Enzo Ferrari’s son recalls first meeting with Lewis Hamilton 10 years ago
Piero Ferrari, the son of Enzo Ferrari and vice chairman of Scuderia Ferrari, has reflected on his first encounter with Lewis Hamilton, reports Daily Mail. The 79-year-old shared the details of that meeting following Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari.
Their first meeting took place in 2014, when Hamilton purchased a LaFerrari sports car. According to Ferrari, they discussed cars, Hamilton’s animal welfare initiatives, and their shared admiration for Ferrari legend and three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda.
At the time, there was no talk of Hamilton ever joining the iconic Italian team. However, in later years, the British driver began expressing his desire to race for Ferrari in conversations with Piero.
"He has expressed to me several times the desire to race with us, but he was tied to commitments with Mercedes and we were equally tied to our drivers. Then the moment came when both Lewis and we saw the opportunity to start negotiations. And the signature came," Ferrari revealed.
Earlier this year, Hamilton stunned the F1 world by announcing his move to Ferrari, bringing an end to his 12-year partnership with Mercedes.
