Emotional tribute: England's Ella Toone honors late father in heartfelt letter
Manchester United and England star Ella Toone has penned a touching open letter to fans in The Players’ Tribune, paying tribute to her late father, who passed away from prostate cancer.
In the letter, Toone shared memories of her father’s unwavering support for her football ambitions as a child, including his playful promise to pay £10 for every goal she scored. She also revealed that he kept his cancer diagnosis hidden from the family for a long time. While he initially achieved remission, the illness returned and ultimately claimed his life in September of last year.
“For the past few months, I’ve been trying to figure it all out, trying to get unstuck. It’s still raw. I still feel the pain digging in, the gutting feeling of not having him here anymore,” Toone wrote in an emotional reflection.
Toone also expressed gratitude for the support of her teammates Beth Mead and Rachel Daly, who have also lost parents recently. She described them as her inspiration and role models during this difficult time.
Her heartfelt message serves as a moving testament to her father’s influence and the strength she draws from those around her.
