In the UEFA Europa League final, Aston Villa thrashed Freiburg 3-0, but it has now emerged that the Birmingham side’s goalkeeper played through injury.
Details: According to Emiliano Martínez himself, he broke a finger on his hand right before kick-off — the first such injury of his career.
Quote: “Today I broke my finger during the warm-up! But for me, every bad thing brings something good. I’ve done this my whole life and I’ll keep doing it. I had never broken a finger before. Every time I caught the ball, it bent the other way. But these are the things you have to go through, and I’m proud to defend Aston Villa,” the Argentine said.
Reminder: This is Aston Villa’s first-ever UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup title in the club’s history. For their manager, however, it marks a fifth triumph in the competition.
He previously lifted the trophy three times with Sevilla, once with Villarreal, and has now added another with Aston Villa.
