Egypt booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging Benin 3-1 after extra time in Marrakesh. Chances were scarce in a tense last-16 clash, with Mohamed Salah quiet until the closing stages.
Marwan Attia finally broke the deadlock with a fine strike from the edge of the area midway through the second half. Benin forced extra time when Junior Olaitan’s cross deflected off Mohamed El Shenawy and Jodel Dossou tapped in late on.
With the teams locked together, Yasser Ibrahim headed Egypt back in front from a set piece. Salah sealed victory in the 124th minute, curling home brilliantly. Egypt now face Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso on Saturday in Agadir after Tuesday.
