Egypt have suffered a major blow at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after fullback Mohamed Hamdy has now been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a serious knee injury.

The defender sustained the injury during Egypt’s Round of 16 clash against Benin on Monday evening, prompting immediate concern from the team’s medical staff.

Medical examinations later confirmed the worst fears. Egypt’s team doctor, Mohamed Abou El-Ela, revealed that scans showed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Hamdy’s knee.

“The scans carried out on Mohamed Hamdy confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee,” Abou El-Ela confirmed.

His absence comes at a crucial time for the Pharaohs, who are preparing for a tough quarter-final encounter. Egypt will face the winner of the match between Burkina Faso and defending champions Ivory Coast on Saturday.
