Nigeria suffered a 2–1 defeat to Egypt in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium as both sides fine-tuned preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Mahmoud Saber found the back of the net, capitalizing on Egypt’s early dominance in midfield. The Super Eagles, however, responded positively and were rewarded shortly before the break.

Chidozie Awaziem drew Nigeria level late in the first half, rising highest to head home Zaidu Sanusi’s well-delivered free kick after the Egyptian defense failed to properly clear their lines. The goal ensured both teams went into halftime on level terms.

Egypt came out with renewed intensity after the restart and quickly regained control of the match. Their pressure paid off in the early stages of the second half when Mostafa Mohamed restored the Pharaohs’ lead with a composed finish.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts to find another equalizer, Egypt held firm to see out the win, handing the Super Eagles a narrow defeat in their final AFCON tune-up.

Looking ahead to the tournament, Egypt will begin their AFCON campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria will kick off their quest for continental glory against Tanzania.
