World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Masters clay court tournament in Madrid, scheduled to take place from April 24 to May 5.

The reason for Djokovic's decision has not been disclosed, but is described as "non-medical" in nature.

French player Lucas Pouille will replace Djokovic in the main draw of the tournament. The top seed spot will now go to the world No. 2, Jannik Sinner.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Serbian tennis player will miss the Masters event in the Spanish capital. Djokovic has won the tournament three times previously, in 2011, 2016, and 2019. The reigning champion is Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic has yet to win a title in 2024. The Serb has been eliminated at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Monte Carlo. The Serbian's last trophy remains a victory at the 2023 ATP World Tour Finals in November.
