English football has officially recorded the fastest relegation from a division in history.
Details: Sheffield Wednesday have been relegated from the Championship ahead of schedule and will drop into the third tier (League One). The fate of the team was sealed in today's Matchday 33 clash, where the "Owls" lost to their fierce rivals Sheffield United, 1-2.
This relegation is unique in the history of professional English football. It took the club only 13 league games to be mathematically stripped of any chance of survival. Such a catastrophic result was caused not just by poor performances but also by dire financial straits: the team started the season with a brutal 18-point deduction after the club was put under external administration.
Even though it's only Matchday 33 on the calendar, for Wednesday the suffering ended as quickly as possible. Sanctions and the inability to pick up points in the midst of crisis turned the fight for survival into a mere formality. The derby defeat served as the final chord in the prolonged downfall of one of England's oldest clubs.
