Devin Haney, the newly crowned WBC super lightweight world champion, made a bold statement after defeating Regis Prograis in the title bout.

Haney believes he deserves the title of "Athlete of the Year," and he thinks his father, Bill, should be acknowledged as the "Coach of the Year" for 2023.

“I feel like at this point that I should be Fighter of the Year. They don’t want to give my dad credit but I think he should be Trainer of the Year.

When they mention the best trainers in boxing, I don’t understand, because they never mention my dad. But he is the best trainer in boxing and it shows. We just went up in weight and fought arguably the best at 140, and didn’t get hit with anything. My dad deserves Trainer of the Year, and I deserve Fighter of the Year, - told Haney.

Haney defeated Prograis in a 12-round fight by unanimous decision - 120-107, 120-107, 120-107. Devin dominated throughout the bout, and Prograis was knocked down in the third round.

It was the American's debut fight in the super lightweight division. Previously, Haney competed in a lower weight class and relinquished his WBA, IBF, and WBO lightweight titles.
