Despite Historical Edge, Egypt Faces Tough Challenge in AFCON 2025
With South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe in Group two, Egypt's national squad, captained by coach Hossam Hassan, has been selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Morocco'll host the competition between 21 December 2025, and 18 January 2026.
Egypt as always excelled its group rivals. They beat Zimbabwe in 2004 and 2019, Angola twice (1996 and 2010), and South Africa in the 1996 group stage and the 1998 final. But prior success doesn't ensure future triumphs. African football has evolved, as seen in Egypt’s recent struggles, including a narrow escape from the group stage in the last AFCON with only three draws before being eliminated by DR Congo.
South Africa, with their strong collective play and star goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, will be a significant challenge. Angola, unbeaten in their last 15 match, also poses serious threat with their European based players.
Hossam Hassan recognized the group difficulty, emphasizing Africa growing competitiveness. Egypt, the most successful afcon team, aims to reclaim the title with stars like Mohamed Salah and emerging talents. The road ahead is tough, but Egypt's determined to make its mark.
