The Canadian women's national team played their first match at the Olympic Games, defeating New Zealand 2-1. However, it was revealed that they achieved this through fraudulent means.
New Zealand filed a complaint against Canada, alleging that their coaching staff had monitored New Zealand's training sessions using a drone. Consequently, the Canadian Olympic Committee decided to dismiss Lombardi and Mander.
Now, FIFA has issued its verdict on the investigation. The Canadian team has been docked six points in the Olympic tournament. Additionally, head coach Beverly Priestman and two other coaches have been suspended for one year. The Canadian Football Federation has been fined $260,000.
It is worth noting that the Canadian team are the reigning Olympic champions. In 2021, they sensationally triumphed under Priestman's leadership. At this Olympics, Canada's group opponents include France, Colombia, and New Zealand. The "Reds" will face France in their next match on Sunday, July 28.
