AFC Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen has been called up to Spain's national team for the upcoming matches against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals. This comes as a result of Iñigo Martínez's forced absence due to a right knee injury.

Details: As reported by the official account of the Spanish national team on X (formerly Twitter), team coach Luis de la Fuente Castillo decided to call up Huijsen, who was previously with the youth team. His place in the U21 squad will be taken by César Tárrega.

This call-up to the main squad marks Huijsen's debut. Ironically, he will have the chance to play against his native country: the defender was born in Amsterdam but has been playing for Spain since 2024.

This season, he has played 27 matches for Bournemouth across all competitions, gradually becoming an integral part of Andoni Iraola's defense. Previously, Dean gained experience in Italy, playing for Juventus and Roma.

Iñigo Martínez, on the other hand, was hoping to return to the national team after a long hiatus, but the injury prevented him from rejoining the "Red Fury." Now, De la Fuente will have to adapt his plans to accommodate the new player in the defensive line.

Reminder: The playoff matches will take place from May 20 to 25, 2025. During this period, the League A quarterfinals will also be held.

The final phase of the Nations League (League A) will take place in June. From June 4 to 8, the semifinals, third-place match, and final will be held.
