Newcastle's midfield rebuild is picking up serious pace.

Details: According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Newcastle United are advancing in talks with Manchester City over a deal for Nico González, and there is hope an agreement can be reached this week. The midfielder is valued at around £50 million. The 24-year-old Spaniard was an unused substitute in City's win over Bournemouth yesterday and is open to a move to St James' Park. Matthias Jaissle wants to add a holding midfielder with Premier League experience before the window closes.

Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe at the helm earlier this month, is in urgent need of a new anchor after losing Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this summer. González looks like an ideal fit: the Spaniard joined City from Porto in February 2025 for £50 million and has since made 59 appearances for the club, scoring four goals, including the winner in last season's FA Cup semifinal against Southampton at Wembley. Should the deal go through, he would become the fourth senior midfielder to leave City this summer after Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.

For the player himself, the move promises regular football, which is hard to come by in City's star-studded squad. It's worth noting that Transfermarkt values Nico González at €40 million, and his contract with the Citizens runs until the summer of 2029.

Reminder: Major deal brewing in the Premier League: Newcastle target Manchester City midfielder.
