De Zerbi speaks candidly about his future in Marseille: what it takes to extend his contract
Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has laid out his demands to the club, stating that his future as head coach hinges on the club's willingness to sign players who fit his tactical preferences. He noted that to continue working with the club, he needs players who can adapt to his system, including four defenders, traditional wingers, and a number ten. De Zerbi emphasized that he has always built his team according to this scheme but also added that a good coach must adapt to the players available.
"If I stay next season, and I'm provided with the right players who can fill the necessary positions, I want to play with four defenders, wingers, and a number ten. I've always set up the team this way, but you have to adapt to the players you have," De Zerbi said, as reported by Get French Football News.
Marseille is in a tough spot following several tactical changes and squad errors. Injuries to key players such as Luiz Felipe and Leonardo Balerdi have compounded the team's defensive issues, forcing the coach to use temporary players in the backline, which hasn't always yielded results.
Marseille currently sits third in Ligue 1 and is fighting for a Champions League qualification spot. The team will face Montpellier in their next match on April 19.
