De la Fuente revealed that he was almost sacked as Spain national team coach in 2023
Luis de la Fuente's start as head coach of the Spanish national football team has been nothing short of impressive. Within his first six months in charge, he led "La Roja" to triumph in the UEFA Nations League and followed that up with a victory in the European Championship during the summer.
However, as he recently revealed, the latter success almost didn’t happen.
Details: Speaking at a lecture at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, de la Fuente shared that he was nearly dismissed by the Spanish Football Federation early in the 2023-24 season.
Quote: “After winning the Nations League, many unpleasant things happened, and I was under pressure. We were playing in Georgia, and if I hadn’t won, I would have been sacked because I was, without a doubt, playing for my job. During the pre-match press conference, I told the journalists, ‘What if we score seven?’ And then the game ended 1-7.”
Reminder: De la Fuente has not been the most popular figure since taking charge of Spain, but his record speaks for itself. He currently holds the best win ratio of any manager in the history of La Roja.
