Dani Alves Wins Legal Battle as CAS Dismisses Pumas' Lawsuit
Dani Alves scored a legal victory as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed a lawsuit filed by Mexican club Pumas UNAM. The Liga MX side had demanded $5 million in damages for alleged breach of contract following Alves' arrest in January 2023 in Spain. According to a report by Goal, the CAS ruling came after a hearing held in Barcelona.
Pumas claimed that Alves’ legal issues hurt their commercial deals and reputation, seeking $3 million for breach of contract and an additional $2 million for damages. However, the CAS determined that Pumas had unilaterally terminated the Brazilian's contract, nullifying the basis for financial compensation.
Although the court denied the initial claim, Pumas may still attempt a separate appeal. For it to succeed, the club would need to provide concrete evidence of financial losses directly linked to Alves’ legal troubles.
Alves joined Pumas in 2022 with high expectations but played only 17 games, scoring once and providing three assists. His stint ended abruptly after he was accused of sexual assault in December 2022 and arrested the following month.
