Manchester United and Newcastle United share a similar fate this season, ranking among the biggest disappointments despite their resources and star-studded lineups. Unfortunately, the Red Devils firmly lead this list, as today’s match demonstrated.
United's defensive woes continue. In recent games, the center-back trio of Mazraoui, De Ligt, and Martinez occasionally managed to save the team. But today, the defense collapsed. The most criticism is directed at Harry Maguire, a player renowned for his aerial prowess but who conceded two headed goals from his zone. Adding to the frustration, the first half saw United struggle to progress beyond their defensive third, failing to bypass Newcastle’s press led by Gordon, Isak, and Joelinton.

Diogo Dalot
Dalot contributed on both ends of the pitch. In the first half, when United were pinned back, he worked hard defensively and helped avert several dangerous situations. Although the Brazilian missed a golden chance to score, he was solid defensively, tallying seven defensive actions—matching Dalot. His performance included several clearances and interceptions. At 32, Casemiro continues to display the defensive commitment and tenacity that many of his teammates lack. He consistently pressured opponents, attempted tackles, and disrupted Newcastle’s midfield.
Christian Eriksen
Like Casemiro, Eriksen’s start was unexpected. After Zirkzee’s early substitution, Eriksen shifted to the No. 10 role, tasked with delivering the ball into the penalty area. He recorded the most crosses (4) for United, though this number reflects the team’s lackluster offensive display. However, Eriksen stood out with 11 ball recoveries, the highest total across both teams.
Worth mentioning
In the first half, United’s tactical plan was evident: defenders would pass the ball wide, expecting the No. 10 to drop deep and facilitate the transition.
The problem was that Eddie Howe had anticipated this approach. Newcastle aggressively pressed Amad Diallo, who struggled under the pressure and failed to make an impact.
