Dailysports player ratings: how Chelsea players performed against Ipswich

Until recently, Chelsea appeared to be Liverpool’s main challenger for the Premier League title. However, a recent string of poor performances has cast doubt on that notion. This time, the Blues suffered a surprising 0-2 defeat against bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Town.

In the opening half-hour, Chelsea showed much more energy and intent compared to their previous matches. It seemed lessons had been learned, and the team was ready to fight for a win. But Chelsea fell into the same trap that has ensnared Manchester City recently—struggling to break down a low block, this time expertly executed by Ipswich. The Blues resorted to endless and ineffective ball circulation around the opposition defense.

To Ipswich’s credit, they were also much sharper than in their previous outings. Perhaps the lively atmosphere of their home ground provided the extra boost.

Best players of the match

Cole Palmer
Palmer remains Chelsea’s most dynamic attacking player. He led the team in shots with four (matched only by João Félix). He was at the center of Chelsea’s best chances: a free-kick that hit the post in the 21st minute, a cross to Félix in the 26th minute (which was unfortunately ruled offside), and another shot off the crossbar in the 46th.

Félix stood out for his willingness to break through the defensive lines, whether with dribbles, incisive passes, or well-timed runs. He wasn’t afraid to take risks, even if it meant occasionally losing possession.

Given this, it’s puzzling why manager Enzo Maresca replaced Félix with Nicolas Jackson. Jackson plays a different role and isn’t suited to breaking down defenses in the same way Félix is. What Chelsea needed at that moment was exactly what Félix was providing.

Moises Caicedo
In a lackluster match, Caicedo was a standout performer. He excelled in several areas, winning 10 of 14 duels—more than any other player except Ipswich’s Liam Delap, who won 7 of 10. Caicedo also made eight defensive actions, a figure unmatched by anyone in Chelsea’s lineup and surpassed only by two Ipswich players.

Additionally, Caicedo completed 98 successful passes, second only to Levi Colwill (113). These stats highlight his pivotal role in Chelsea’s midfield during the match.
