Cricket legend and South Africa icon AB de Villiers: "Bangladesh missing the World Cup is a blow to cricket"
Global cricket legend AB de Villiers has voiced his deep disappointment over Bangladesh's absence from the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Details: Speaking on his YouTube channel “AB de Villiers 360,” the former South Africa captain said that a scenario where a team is forced to withdraw from a tournament of this magnitude severely damages the sport's image. In his view, such conflicts should never be allowed to reach the point of no return.
De Villiers emphasized that he does not want to take sides, recognizing the deeply political nature of the issue. Nevertheless, he strongly condemned political interference in sport, calling the current situation “deeply regrettable.”
“I hate it when politics is mixed with cricket. Those responsible should have resolved this issue,” added the 41-year-old veteran, urging officials to seek compromise.
As a reminder, the ICC has officially replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in Group C after rejecting Bangladesh's request to move matches from India to Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council’s board voted overwhelmingly against Bangladesh’s demands, despite concerns raised about player safety. The 20-team tournament is set to kick off on February 7 across venues in India and Sri Lanka.
