Controversial incident in the Premier League’s marquee match! Gabriel blocks Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez, but referee allows the goal
Arsenal struck first in the marquee clash of Premier League Matchweek 19 against Aston Villa, following a contentious scene in the visitors’ penalty area.
Details: The Gunners found the net from a corner, with centre-back Gabriel Magalhães steering the ball home. During the play, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez vigorously appealed to the referee, insisting that Gabriel had blocked him inside his own six-yard box and interfered with his ability to challenge for the ball. Despite protests from the Argentine keeper and the Villa players, the head referee, after a VAR review, stood by the decision to award the goal.
As a result, Arsenal took a 1-0 lead, and later the hosts consolidated their advantage — Martin Zubimendi doubled the score, leaving Aston Villa with an even steeper mountain to climb.
That was already Gabriel’s third goal in nineteen appearances for Arsenal across all competitions this season. He’s also tallied three assists.
Reminder: Declan Rice missed the match against Aston Villa due to injury.
