Contract drama! Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes hit roadblock in new deal talks
Manchester United still have plenty of work to do to secure the long-term future of their captain.
Details: According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes remain in negotiations over a new contract, but the parties have yet to reach an agreement. Salary, the length of the proposed deal and the release clause are among the main points still being discussed.
Fernandes' existing contract with Manchester United runs until the summer of 2027, while the club also hold an option to extend the agreement for another 12 months. That gives United some protection, but the lack of a breakthrough means the captain's longer-term future at Old Trafford remains unresolved.
The release-clause issue is particularly important in the negotiations. Fernandes' current agreement reportedly contains a clause worth around £57 million, and the conditions of any new deal are now among the subjects being negotiated. Recent reports have also indicated that the Portuguese midfielder wants to remain at Manchester United despite interest from clubs abroad.
It is worth noting that Fernandes produced a historic Premier League campaign in 2025/26. The Portuguese recorded 21 assists, breaking the competition's single-season record previously shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He was also named the Premier League Player of the Season.
