According to European media, the transfer is part of the deal that took Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for €42 million plus variables. As part of the agreement, the English club will loan Echeverri for one season to Olympique Lyonnais, which already features Argentine players Nicolás Tagliafico and Thiago Almada.
Claudio "Diablito" Echeverri, recently included by Pep Guardiola in the Club World Cup squad, may be loaned out after limited playing time at City. Diario Panorama reported that while Guardiola values the young forward from Chaco, he recognizes the lack of minutes available in the upcoming season. Initially, Girona was considered, but with the Cherki negotiations, Lyon gained the upper hand.
Manchester City also offered James McAtee, but the French club opted for the Argentine. Echeverri made his debut in the FA Cup, impressing in 14 minutes against Crystal Palace, and later featured against Fulham in the Premier League. The loan aims to provide the game time Guardiola cannot guarantee in England.
