Chinese club fined for... using amulets to intimidate opponents
As is well known, teams often turn to various deities in hopes of attracting good fortune to their side. Some visit churches or cathedrals before a match, others consult shamans. But the Chinese club Changchun Xidu took a most unconventional route.
Details: According to Reuters, this third-division club has been fined 30,000 yuan (nearly $4,200) for... placing superstitious amulets to intimidate their opponents. During their home game against Shanxi Chongde Runhai on June 28, Changchun Xidu taped yellow paper talismans to the walls of the home locker room.
The talismans bore inscriptions such as: "By command, Shanxi Chongde Runhai must be defeated." The tactic certainly worked— the hosts secured a 2-0 victory— but football authorities did not appreciate the gesture and fined Changchun Xidu for intimidating their opponents.
Reminder: In the northern group of China's third-tier division, Changchun Xidu currently sits in second place.
