Chile Suspends Superclásico After Monumental Tragedy Raises Security Fears
The Chilean government has officially suspended the highly anticipated Superclásico between Universidad de Chile and Colo Colo, which was scheduled for Sunday, April 13, at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. The decision comes in the wake of a violent tragedy at the Monumental stadium during Thursday's Copa Libertadores match against Fortaleza, where two Colo Colo fans lost their lives outside the venue.
According to La Tercera and RedGol, the Ministry of Public Security acted on the recommendation from Carabineros, who deemed the match a risk given recent threats, public unrest, and the planned funeral for the victims on the same day. “The Executive agrees with the conclusion from Carabineros: the match cannot take place,” said Minister Luis Cordero.
The Chilean FA (ANFP) had already shown signs of concern by canceling Friday’s pre-match captains' press conference. From the Colo Colo camp, Club Social y Deportivo president Edmundo Valladares stated, “Out of respect for the victims’ families, it is not advisable to play.”
This marks the second time this year the Superclásico has been postponed, following the Supercopa clash in January that was delayed due to venue concerns. The decision underscores ongoing security challenges facing Chilean football, particularly when hosting matches involving the nation’s most passionate and divided fan bases.
