Cedric Bakambu sends a message to the Congolese people following the Leopards’ World Cup qualification

Stating that this qualification embodies the collective dream shared by the Congolese people, the player spoke of the ongoing suffering in the east of the DR Congo.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is returning to the World Cup after 52 years. The Leopards secured their place in the final of the intercontinental play-offs on 31 March 2026. A qualification that was celebrated with great fanfare across the country. Following the celebrations on 5 April, Cedric Bakambu addressed his compatriots. In a message posted on his social media, he emphasised the pride of representing an entire nation on the world stage.

Dear Congolese brothers and sisters, I am filled with gratitude and pride to announce that we have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with our national team. I share this dream with all of you. Together, let us make the voice of the Congo heard on the world stage. However, I do not forget the pain and suffering endured by the east of our country, ravaged by wars and conflicts for far too many years. Every effort we make on the pitch, every moment of sacrifice, is also for them. We carry their hopes with us, and every step towards the World Cup is a step towards hope for all the Congolese people.
