In the second round of the FIFA Club World Cup, Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a 4–3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, but the bigger worry is an injury picked up by one of the South African side’s key players.
Details: The player in question is striker Lebo Mothiba, who came off the bench in the 77th minute and managed to score in the match. However, it appears he sustained an injury during the game, and Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso provided an update on his condition.
Quote: “As for Lebo, I’m not certain. He’ll have to undergo a medical to determine whether he has a muscular injury — that’s what we need to check. His knee is fine,” said the Spanish tactician.
After two rounds, Mamelodi Sundowns have one win and one loss under their belt. They currently sit on three points and are set to face Fluminense in their final group match. That showdown is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, at 21:00 CET.
Reminder: This goal marked Mothiba’s first for Sundowns since joining from French side Strasbourg, where he left as a free agent. The forward had suffered a serious knee injury at the end of 2023, which sidelined him for nearly a year and a half.
