It was 1-1 after regular time, leading to a penalty shootout where Canada made one more mistake than their rivals. 6-5—the Guatemalans triumph over Canada in the shootout and book their place in the semifinals.
The other quarterfinal was just as dramatic, also going the distance to penalties. The USA and Costa Rica finished 2-2 after a thrilling and evenly matched contest, sending the tie to a nerve-wracking shootout.
