Argentina waits. Messi has yet to decide if he will play at the 2026 World Cup

Inter Miami star and Argentina captain Lionel Messi still has not made a final decision on whether he will participate in the 2026 World Cup. This was revealed by Messi's authorized biographer Guillem Balague in a comment to BBC Sport.
"No one knows, not even Messi himself, whether he’ll play at the next World Cup. If he stays in America, he’ll make his decision closer to the tournament. Right now, he’s just enjoying the moment. Many hope he’ll lead Argentina again, but ultimately, it will be his personal choice," Balague said.
Although the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is expected to feature at the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Messi himself is holding back from making any definitive statements. Balague emphasized that Leo lives "game by game" and doesn’t make long-term plans. His contract with Inter Miami could be extended, but even that does not guarantee his appearance at the World Cup.
