Cameroon’s hopes of playing in CHAN 2024 were crushed in a dramatic way after a surprising 2-1 loss at home to the Central African Republic (CAR) in the second leg of their qualifier. Even though Cameroon had won 1-0 in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire, the total score of 2-2 meant CAR moved forward because of the away goals rule. This was a historic moment for CAR.
The game started well for Cameroon, with Angel Yondjo scoring an early goal, raising hopes of making it to the next round. But CAR tied the game with a penalty just before halftime, changing the flow of the match.
In the 87th minute, Bertillon Arnold scored the winning goal for CAR, just when it seemed like the game would end in a draw. This last-minute goal secured Cameroon’s spot but also ended their CHAN tournament journey, giving CAR an exciting win.
Cameroon, who had hoped to stay in the tournament longer, is very disappointed by their sudden exit. For CAR, this is a moment to celebrate and show their growing ambitions in football.
