CAF Announces New Dates for CHAN 2025
The Confederation of African Football CAF has officially set new dates for the 2025 African Nations Championship CHAN, which had been previously postponed. The tournament will now take place from 2 August to 30 August 2025.
This announcement was made in official statement released by CAF on Tuesday, following the Executive Committee meeting held in Rabat, Morocco, under the leadership of Patrice Motsepe.
While CAF confirmed the organization of additional qualification tournament featuring 7 invited teams—Algeria, Comoros, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, and South Africa—the exact dates for these qualifiers remain unclear.
The 2 teams that qualify from this tournament will join Uganda, Niger, and Guinea in Group C, bringing the total number of participating teams to 19.
The tournament was primarily postponed due to Kenya’s delays in preparing the necessary infrastructure. As one of the co-hosts, Kenya still lacks stadiums that meet CAF’s required standards, raising concerns about its ability to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
In addition to setting new CHAN dates, the CAF Executive Committee approved several other major decisions:
The Women’s Futsal Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco from 22 April to 30 April 2025, with the 2 finalists qualifying for the FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup in the Philippines.
The CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations will expand from 12 to 16 teams starting in 2025.
The bidding process has been opened for hosting several future tournaments, including the CAF Women’s Champions League 2025 - 2027 and the CAF U17 and U20 Africa Cup of Nations for multiple editions.
With these strategic moves, CAF aims to strengthen its competitions and enhance football development across the continent.
