Today, February 8, the decorated alpine skier was unable to finish the Olympic downhill in Italy.

Details: Losing her balance on one of the opening turns, the 41-year-old athlete—already competing with a severe knee injury—suffered further damage. Competition was immediately halted to provide emergency medical assistance to the American legend.

This start was already being called a medical miracle. Just nine days before the Olympics, on January 30, at a World Cup stage, Vonn crashed into the safety netting, resulting in a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Even though her knee had essentially stopped functioning, Lindsey refused to give up and decided to compete at the Olympic Games despite the injury.

“I don't want to go home with regrets, knowing I didn't even try. I'll do everything I can to be at the start,” Vonn declared before the Games began.

Unfortunately, on the unforgiving Olympic course, where even the slightest mistake is costly, her injured knee could not withstand the extreme pressure.

Reminder: Kenyan alpine skier Sabrina Simader withdrew from the Olympic Games.
