BREAKING. The Kenyan athlete had her Olympic medal reinstated following an appeal
At the 2024 Olympic Games, the final women's 5000 meters race sparked controversy surrounding the Kenyan athlete.
Following the race, the organizers disqualified Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon for unsportsmanlike conduct, as she had elbowed Ethiopian Medina Aissa in the final meters. Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, who finished third, was awarded the silver medal after Kipyegon's disqualification, while the bronze medal was ultimately given to Nadia Battocletti of Italy.
However, according to the official Athletics Kenya page, they filed an appeal against the decision. Moreover, they succeeded in overturning the ruling and restoring the medal to their athlete.
As a result, Faith Kipyegon retained her silver medal. Thus, the podium now stands as follows: Beatrice Chebet - gold, Faith Kipyegon - silver, and Sifan Hassan - bronze.
For representatives of Kenya, this is the third award at these Olympic Games.
