One of France’s most decorated clubs now stands on the brink of total collapse.

Details: The DNCG appeals committee has upheld Bordeaux’s exclusion from all national competitions for the 2026/27 season. Now, at best, the Girondins will be able to start next season in Régional 1—the sixth tier of French football.

The situation became virtually hopeless after the British investment fund Sparta withdrew from negotiations. The potential buyer failed to provide the roughly €10 million needed to finance the upcoming season.

Bordeaux now faces the threat of compulsory liquidation as early as the end of July. If that happens, the club risks not only further relegation into amateur football, but could also effectively cease to exist in its current form.

It’s worth noting that Bordeaux have been crowned French champions six times. Their most recent Ligue 1 title came in the 2008/09 season.

Reminder: Legendary Oliver Kahn could become the owner of Bordeaux.
