The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has selected Dorival Junior as the coach to lead the national team to the 2026 World Cup. Dorival Junior signed a contract until the conclusion of the global tournament.

The official announcement of Dorival 's departure to lead the Brazil national team was made by São Paulo, where he coached in the recently concluded season.

Dorival Junior replaces Fernando Diniz as the head coach of the Brazilian national team. Diniz was dismissed due to unsatisfactory results in the World Cup qualifiers.

Initially, it was expected that the five-time world champions would be led by the legendary Carlo Ancelotti. The CBF had even finalized all the conditions with him, but he ultimately decided to extend his contract with Real Madrid.

Dorival Junior has spent his entire coaching career in Brazil. In addition to São Paulo, he has worked with Flamengo, Atlético Paranaense, Santos, Palmeiras, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama, Internacional, Cruzeiro, Coritiba, Ceará, Juventude, Sao Caetano, and Fortaleza.

The Brazil national team had a disappointing start to the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, accumulating only 7 points in the first six matches and currently occupies the sixth position out of ten possible.
